The Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton has a population of
nearly 40,000, and properly housing these personnel is a constant
challenge. Area 21 of the base features BEQ after BEQ along a frontage
road from Interstate 5, with the road ending abruptly in the dirt near a
vacant lot. There was room for a BEQ structure on the lot, but traffic
flow in the area was a grave concern. How do you control the flow of 200
vehicles through only one entrance?
C. E. Wylie Construction Co.’s design for the project
included a solution to this critical issue. The frontage road runs
parallel to another active road, and connecting the two would increase
flow in and around the area. The frontage road no longer “ends” at all, it
merely curves to the left and connects to other nearby streets.
In addition to this road realignment, our contract called
for the design and construction of an 80,000 square foot bachelor enlisted
quarters—four-story with 200 rooms—constructed using masonry with precast
concrete plank and a standing seam metal roof. Additional work included a
separate 3,000 square foot activity center and parking for 200 vehicles. |
