This facility serves
patients and visitors to the UCSD Medical Center, located on the edge of
San Diego's Mission Valley. Located in a steep-sided natural canyon, the
parking structure required extensive earthwork operations to create access
directly from Mission Valley, in addition to the existing access from the
Mission Hills area.
The parking structure is wing-shaped
and cuts into the hillside to take maximum advantage of the limited
available space. In some areas, the structure is within one foot of the
property line. Our design also demonstrated sensitivity to the natural
canyon and nearby property owners.
Six levels of
continuous parking were used, including the
“parking-on-ramp”
feature common in garages with site restrictions. Additionally, we used an
innovative, helical ramp to expedite exiting from each level. Features
include toll collection, elevators, a pedestrian bridge, elastomeric deck
toppings, and the extensive use of colored concrete to blend the structure
into the surrounding natural canyon. |
