This
unique facility, one of only two on the west coast and four in the United
States, contained multiple special systems and materials to replicate
shipboard fire-fighting conditions.
The project involved a new academic building along with six trainer
structures, located in an active area of this local military installation.
The
academic building was two-level, with masonry exterior walls, precast
intermediate floor and roof, light structural framing, normal architecture
finishes, and standard mechanical / electrical systems. The trainer
structures were composed of cast-in-place concrete, designed to replicate
shipboard areas, and also involved extensive steel plating, a variety of
crawl spaces and passages, and a unique industrial refractory lining
system, similar to that used in oil/gas production facilities. Surrounding
sitework included concrete paving, irrigation / landscaping, a
concrete water storage facility, an above-ground steel water tank, an
observation platform, and special fencing.
